Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. She was not allowed to perform by her parents until she reached an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the anxiety it could create. Perry was shy during high school and did not act. She began acting in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was transferred from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University, moved to New York in search of acting roles on television. Perry was able to land small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness drove her to California to find theater work. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. In 2017, she played an recurring role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal with her father. In the same year, her character was cast a younger character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of her mother's. The character was picked by auditions, even the fact that she had a deep association with it.
